July 6: Oulu again
Went into town to have a look around. Oulu is a lively city with a large university, and the largest number of rollerbladers we had ever seen. There seemed to be more rollerbladers than pedestrians. Probably something to do with the excellent network of sumptuously smooth cycle paths which permeates the city.
Spent some time wandering the streets and the market (Finland seems to be full of markets in the summer). Succeeded, with great difficulty, in hiring bicycles. They turned out to be the dodgiest bikes in the history of cycling, but at least the wheels went round.
Another supermarket-bought supper: this time I introduced my companions to Finnish sausages and viili, a slimy yoghurt-like substance which, like Marmite, disgusts those not exposed to it from infancy.
