Appendix B: Types of pain experienced
Within a very short space of time, we realised that we were experiencing a wide variety of different types of pain and discomfort. In fact, the exclamation ``It's a whole new kind of pain!'' became something of a catchphrase. In the interests of completeness, they are enumerated below.
- Being bitten by mosquitoes.
- Running for a train while carrying 20kg of luggage.
- Going swimming in unexpectedly cold water.
- Cycling on really quite phenomenally bad bikes. With luggage.
- Getting up unpleasantly early.
- Being very very hungry.
- Being stuffed full of food due to ordering too much due to being very very hungry.
- Walking a long way in the rain with heavy bags.
- Losing a wallet and trying to gain the cooperation of the Finnish rail network in retreiving it.
- Being very cold on the top deck of a ferry when it's windy.
- Cycling a very long way with heavy rucksacks.
- Cycling a very long way with heavy rucksacks in the rain.
- Rollerblading. Especially stopping.
- Getting rained on and soaked and cold.
- Sharing a room with the world's most malodorous Belgian.
- Standing up all day due to going to too many museums.
- Getting lost on the outskirts of Tallinn and wandering many miles.
- Being crammed on a packed hydrofoil watching a biopic of Rock Hudson, subtitled in Estonian, with the sound switched off.
- Using Kangoo Jumps (a.k.a. ``Bouncy Boots'') for any significant length of time.
