Appendix B: Types of pain experienced

Within a very short space of time, we realised that we were experiencing a wide variety of different types of pain and discomfort. In fact, the exclamation ``It's a whole new kind of pain!'' became something of a catchphrase. In the interests of completeness, they are enumerated below.

  1. Being bitten by mosquitoes.
  2. Running for a train while carrying 20kg of luggage.
  3. Going swimming in unexpectedly cold water.
  4. Cycling on really quite phenomenally bad bikes. With luggage.
  5. Getting up unpleasantly early.
  6. Being very very hungry.
  7. Being stuffed full of food due to ordering too much due to being very very hungry.
  8. Walking a long way in the rain with heavy bags.
  9. Losing a wallet and trying to gain the cooperation of the Finnish rail network in retreiving it.
  10. Being very cold on the top deck of a ferry when it's windy.
  11. Cycling a very long way with heavy rucksacks.
  12. Cycling a very long way with heavy rucksacks in the rain.
  13. Rollerblading. Especially stopping.
  14. Getting rained on and soaked and cold.
  15. Sharing a room with the world's most malodorous Belgian.
  16. Standing up all day due to going to too many museums.
  17. Getting lost on the outskirts of Tallinn and wandering many miles.
  18. Being crammed on a packed hydrofoil watching a biopic of Rock Hudson, subtitled in Estonian, with the sound switched off.
  19. Using Kangoo Jumps (a.k.a. ``Bouncy Boots'') for any significant length of time.
